Art Assistant Teacher

Job Title: Art Assistant Teacher
Department: Enrichment
Program Supervisor’s Title: Enrichment Program Director & Lead Teacher
Employee Classification: Full Time, Non-exempt

The Art Teacher Assistant is a critical component for the successful operation of the Early Childhood and Elementary programs at MAC. This position is responsible for supporting the ECE Art Curriculum and implementation as well as assisting the lead in communication regarding the program to the leadership team, Elementary Art teacher and the families of the program. This assistant is also responsible for supporting the Artist in Residence program with the lead. The position is responsible for supporting the lead in creating a curriculum, finding and collaborating with Artists and promoting the program.

Responsibility and Duties

  • Support Primary classroom in non-art classroom times as classroom assistant
  • Help create and document a developmentally appropriate Art curriculum that is aligned with the Montessori Curriculum
  • Assist in creating and documenting weekly lesson plans that scaffold skills for the Toddler and Primary community. Coordinate with Elementary Art lead to ensure a seamless skill transition for the students
  • Coordinate with Art Lead and Nido (Infant) teachers to provide or support art related activities at least once per week
  • Use class budget to maintain and refresh supplies for Art studio
  • Collaborate with lead teachers to communicate current curriculum
  • Maintain an Art classroom web page that describes skill-building philosophy for current and potential parents of MAC with Art Lead teacher
  • Promote local Art experiences for children via web page
  • Attend annual fall festival and run an art booth
  • Attend all professionally related events for MAC – gala, back to school night, fundraising events, staff meetings

Class Environment Responsibilities

  • Complete daily and weekly side work
  • Manage daily/weekly side work cleaning schedule with lead
  • Maintain files and recordkeeping and planning with lead
  • Work independently and with fellow staff to consistently improve and clean the environment. The Art studio should be a showcase for the program
  • Open art studio prior to first class arriving 9AM daily
  • Close art studio after 4:30 pick up or when ratio allows (by 5PM) daily

Artist is Resident Responsibilities

  • Solicit no fewer than four local artists to share Art medium with the Primary class
  • Confirm and schedule Artists 2 months in advance
  • Create a monthly update for the class web page
  • Work with gala liaison to structure Artist recognition, display of Art and hosting artist at the Gala

After Care Responsibilities

  • Open the Art studio for studio work for the Primary After care
  • Maintain ratio for the after care environment
  • Coordinate with Primary After School Lead


  • Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts
  • ECE lead teacher qualified or willingness to obtain within 6 months
  • Experience working with preschool students
  • Experience teaching classes
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to manage preparation time
  • Ability to manage support staff

Salary and Benefits

  • This position is eligible for benefits and the hourly wage range is $15.30 - $17.00
