MAC Middle Prepares for Immersive Travel Experience to Belize
Jenni Lucero

MAC Middle teachers and students are in full preparation mode for their upcoming trip in February to Belize with World Leadership School! The experience is truly an opportunity to synthesize the thinking, feeling and doing that students have been engaging their heads, hearts and hands in since the start of the school year. During this rich 10-day experience, students will become immersed in a local community, learn first-hand about the effects of climate change on local ecosystems, work on a community project at the Howard Smith Nazarene Primary School to make a meaningful impact, and grow through the transformative experience of travel. In order to get the most out of their experience, students are working through pre-program learning to explore topics of identity, community and culture as well as setting personal and group goals. They have even been practicing their swimming skills at the local recreation center to be ready to explore the life within Belize's spectacular barrier reef system. The itinerary is packed with purposeful learning experiences including visits to Mayan ruins in a tropical jungle, a tropical education center, bird sanctuary, and snorkeling in one of the many cayes in Belize. When asked about the trip, the excitement of the students is palpable. “I am excited to stay in an over-the-water bungalow,” said one MAC Middle Student, while a classmate added, “I’m excited to go snorkeling!” We are so excited for each of our fearless, forward MAC Middle students to have this experience!
