Upper Elementary Literacy Circles

3rd grade Lit Circle
Jennine Friess

In our Upper Elementary classroom, Literacy Circles play a key role in fostering a love for reading, critical thinking, and collaborative discussion.

Students meet in grade-level groups—4th, 5th, and 6th—to engage in thoughtful conversations about their chosen books, developing comprehension skills, analytical thinking, and respectful dialogue. Currently, students are practicing annotating their reading. They mark points in the book that they love, find interesting or important, highlight key characters or plot details, and even note moments that make them laugh.

Our 3rd graders have been invited to visit the Upper Elementary classroom to begin participation in a Literacy Circle, helping them learn how to engage with books in a deeper way. This introduction begins with their 3rd-grade peers and gradually expands to include the older students. Through this process, they build confidence in their ability to contribute to group discussions and feel prepared and excited for the next step in their educational journey.
