Toddlers Caring for the Environment

Toddler sweeping
Jennine Friess

In our Toddler community, caring for the indoor environment is an essential part of learning. Through the Practical Life work of watering plants, children practice carrying a water-filled can, observing the difference between wet and dry, and responding to the needs of a living thing.

This purposeful activity builds fine and gross motor skills, supports concentration, and fosters independence and responsibility.

Sweeping offers toddlers the opportunity to care for their shared space using child-sized tools. As children sweep with intention, they strengthen large muscle movement, coordination, and focus while learning to clean up after themselves and keep their environment beautiful.

These simple, meaningful activities reflect the heart of Montessori education: giving children real work with real purpose. When toddlers care for their environment, they are not just practicing skills, they are building confidence, responsibility, and a deep sense of belonging as fearless, forward learners.
