The Long Bead Chain in Primary Montessori Math

The Long Bead Chain in Primary Montessori Math
Jennine Friess

In our Primary classrooms, the long bead chain is a favorite “big work” that beautifully illustrates a child’s growing sense of independence, concentration, and joy in learning.

This material allows students to count by tens, hundreds, or even thousands, reinforcing their understanding of number sequencing and place value. Because the work is so long, children often carry it into the front office or hallway, proudly laying out the entire chain to complete their counting. This extended activity not only strengthens mathematical understanding but also highlights the child’s perseverance and excitement in taking on a challenging, hands-on project that literally stretches beyond the classroom walls.
