How Montessori Maps Bring Geography to Life in Primary Classrooms
Jennine Friess

Geography comes alive in Primary classrooms through hands-on exploration, and one of the most impactful materials students use is the Montessori maps. These puzzle-style maps allow children to physically build their understanding of the world.

This work naturally supports language development and sparks curiosity about cultures, people, and environments beyond their own. Because children are free to choose and repeat this work, they engage purposefully and independently, building confidence and intrinsic motivation. More than memorizing place names, these maps lay the foundation for a global perspective, helping students see themselves as part of a larger world by planting early seeds of curiosity, empathy, and connection that continue to grow throughout their Montessori journey.
