How MAC Measures Student Growth

How MAC Measures Student Growth
Jennine Friess

This week, our Upper School students engaged in mid-year assessments designed to deepen our understanding of how they are learning and growing. Students in grades 3–8 completed the ERB CTP-4 assessment, which measures progress across reading, vocabulary, writing, quantitative reasoning, math, and science

In January, Kindergarten-3rd-grade students participated in the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment, a tool that helps us better understand foundational reading development. Teachers receive results quickly and meet as a team to reflect on outcomes, identify patterns, and make thoughtful adjustments to instruction to ensure we are meeting each student’s learning needs.

Assessment at MAC is not something that happens to students; it’s something we learn with them. Teachers share results with students in age-appropriate ways, helping learners better understand their strengths, areas for growth, and next steps. From a Montessori perspective, testing is also an important application of practical life, offering students the opportunity to experience standardized assessments with confidence and a growth mindset, skills they will carry forward throughout their academic journeys. This purpose-driven approach to assessment strengthens student agency and allows teachers to continually refine and enrich the learning experience at MAC.
