Hands-On Math in Montessori

Child using the small bead frame for math
Jennine Friess

Lower Elementary students were working hard last week. In Montessori classrooms, math comes to life through hands-on exploration.

Students use the Small Bead Frame to perform addition and subtraction with large numbers, physically exchanging beads between units, tens, hundreds, and thousands to visualize place value and deepen their understanding of computation. As they progress, they apply the same sense of discovery to geometry, using the Geometry Stick Box to classify angles by size. They learn that a right angle forms a perfect corner, an acute angle is smaller, and an obtuse angle is larger, gaining insight through observation and reasoning rather than memorization. Through these experiences, children build a lasting love for math grounded in curiosity.
