Food Prep in the Toddler Community

Food Prep in the Toddler Community
Jennine Friess

In the Toddler community, friends prepare their lunch vegetables. Food prep is more than just a fun activity; it’s a key part of Montessori Practical Life work.

When toddlers wash, peel, and chop vegetables, they develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and concentration, all while contributing to a meaningful daily routine. Food preparation fosters independence by allowing toddlers to take part in a real, purposeful task with a clear outcome. These activities also nurture a sense of pride and independence as children see the direct impact of their work while they enjoy food together at lunch.
